Soak up the details
This was my own ensuite and showcased my maniacal attention to detail. The wall tiles are large format 600x300mm and require precision installation to avoid lippage and alignment issues. There are numerous bespoke details and constructions in this ensuite, from my own design of floating and illuminated technical coving (no visible attachment to ceiling or wall), to the inset mosaic shower door wall rebate. The tiled ceiling panel in the shower isn’t just for show, it provides long-term protection. The mosaic details above the doorway are my nod to Charles Rennie Mackintosh, carrying the mosaic element around the room. The details include setting into a precisely cut hole into the wall tile with metal inlays and framing.
As with all my work, the ‘foundations’ and preparation are critical to a quality job that will perform for many years. I stripped the ensuite back to studwork and blockwork before lining with Aquapanel and 18mm ply in areas of high anchor loads on walls. Aside from the doorway wall the entire room was ‘tanked’ prior to tiling… to say it was overengineered and protected is an understatement.
